Anthropic is changing the weekly usage limits for Claude Code, but users who are currently benefiting from a temporary boost will have less weekly capacity once the new limits take effect.
Starting September 14, 2026, Anthropic says it will permanently raise the standard weekly usage limits for Claude Code by 25% for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans.
Until then, the company says the current 50% increase in weekly limits will remain in place. Anthropic’s Claude Code account announced the change on August 29.
The distinction is important because the new permanent limit is lower than the temporary allowance many users have today. Anthropic says the September change works out to a roughly 17% reduction compared with the current level.
The calculation is straightforward. If the original weekly allowance is represented as 100%, the temporary increase gives users 150%. The permanent increase announced for September brings that baseline to 125%.
Moving from 150% to 125% represents a reduction of about 16.7%, which Anthropic has rounded to 17%.
In its announcement, Anthropic said it had been working to determine what it could “sustainably serve” and said more changes are being developed to give users greater visibility and control over their usage.
The company has not announced those additional changes in detail.
The September 14 adjustment applies to Claude Code’s standard weekly limits. It does not, based on the announcement, introduce a new subscription tier or announce a change to plan prices.
Anthropic has also not published a fixed number of tokens or messages associated with the new weekly limits. Its usage-limit documentation says consumption can vary according to factors including conversation length and complexity, the model being used, features involved and selected effort level.
Claude also uses more than one type of usage restriction. Anthropic distinguishes between usage limits, which control how much users can interact with Claude over a period, and length limits, which control how much information can fit into a conversation or request.
For paid users, Claude Code usage also sits alongside usage from other Claude surfaces. Anthropic says usage across Claude, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same subscription usage allowance where applicable.
That means the practical effect of the weekly limit change can vary from one user to another depending on how they use Claude.
Heavy Claude Code users are likely to notice the September adjustment more directly because agentic coding sessions can involve repeated file inspection, code changes, command execution and testing. However, Anthropic has not stated that the September change was caused by any specific workload or product activity.
The company has made other changes to its approach to Claude usage this year.
Anthropic previously offered a temporary 50% increase to Claude Code’s weekly limits. That promotion is the allowance that remains in place until September 14 under the latest announcement.
Anthropic has also introduced usage credits that allow eligible paid subscribers to continue working after reaching included usage limits through consumption-based pricing at standard API rates.
Those credits provide a way for users to continue using Claude after hitting their included allowance instead of simply waiting for a reset, provided the feature is enabled and available on the relevant plan.
Anthropic’s help documentation says the paid-plan usage-credit system applies to Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x subscribers. Users can switch to consumption-based pricing after reaching their included limits.
The company has also experimented with different approaches to usage for developers building with Claude. However, Anthropic currently says changes previously announced for the Claude Agent SDK were paused on June 15, meaning Agent SDK, claude -p and third-party application usage continue to draw from subscription usage limits for now.
Anthropic’s help page says the previously announced separate monthly Agent SDK credit is not currently available and that the company is working on a revised approach.
The latest Claude Code announcement therefore represents a narrower change: a permanent adjustment to standard weekly limits beginning September 14.
The timing comes as Anthropic continues to expand its computing infrastructure. Reuters reported on August 26 that Anthropic plans to invest $45 billion to rent computing capacity from Nscale over six years, giving the company access to 460 megawatts of power capacity.
Reuters also reported that Anthropic has secured additional hardware commitments involving AMD and has a separate arrangement with SpaceX for data-center capacity.
Those infrastructure commitments show the scale of computing resources Anthropic is arranging for its products, but the company has not publicly linked those deals to the Claude Code limit change.
For Claude Code subscribers, the immediate takeaway is therefore simple: the standard weekly allowance will be permanently higher than the original baseline, but it will be lower than the temporary 50% boosted allowance available until September 14.
Users currently operating at the temporary level should expect their weekly Claude Code capacity to move from roughly 150% of the old baseline to 125% when the new policy takes effect.
