Google Search generated $63.35 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2026, but its year-over-year growth slowed to 12%. At the same time, Google acknowledged that its AI Mode search experience was generating less advertising revenue relative to its growing usage.
On October 28, Google announced that it was expanding ads in AI Mode to 10 additional countries, including Nigeria. The move comes as the company tries to turn increasingly conversational searches into a sustainable source of advertising revenue.
The announcement reveals an interesting tension in Google’s AI strategy: people are using Search in new ways, but generating more queries does not automatically produce more advertising revenue.
Google Is Bringing AI Mode Ads to 10 New Countries
In an official announcement on October 28, Shashi Thakur, Google’s vice president and general manager of Search Ads and Ads on Google Experiences, confirmed that the company was expanding its AI Mode advertising rollout internationally.
The 10 markets are:
- Australia
- Canada
- India
- Kenya
- Malaysia
- New Zealand
- Nigeria
- Pakistan
- The Philippines
- Singapore
Google also plans to expand AI Mode ads to Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom during the fourth quarter of 2026. Those three markets were part of its future plans, not the 10-country expansion announced on October 28.
The expansion creates more opportunities to show relevant commercial recommendations during AI-assisted searches. For advertisers, it opens additional opportunities to reach users who may be researching products, comparing services or trying to solve a problem before making a purchase.
Search Revenue Is Growing More Slowly
Alphabet’s third-quarter financial results reported $63.35 billion in Google Search and other revenue, up 12% year over year. That was slower than the 17% growth recorded in Q2 and the 19% reported in Q1 2026.
| Quarter | Search revenue growth |
|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | 19% |
| Q2 2026 | 17% |
| Q3 2026 | 12% |
The figures show a clear deceleration in year-over-year growth. Search revenue also increased only slightly from approximately $63.27 billion in Q2 to $63.35 billion in Q3, although sequential comparisons can be affected by seasonal patterns.
There is an important distinction here. Google is not reporting a year-over-year decline in Search revenue. Instead, its revenue is increasing at a slower rate than in earlier quarters.
CEO Sundar Pichai said Search query growth had reached its highest year-over-year rate in five years. The contrast between growing search activity and slower advertising revenue helps explain why Google is investing in new advertising formats.
Google Admits AI Mode Monetization Is Lower
During Alphabet’s earnings call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler discussed several factors behind the slowdown in Search growth. Foreign exchange was the largest driver of the deceleration relative to Q2, according to Schindler. He also cited changes in retail, media and entertainment advertising spending.
He then addressed AI Mode directly, explaining that the strong growth in AI Mode queries had affected Search growth because Google was seeing lower monetization within the experience.
That admission is significant because AI Mode is designed to handle longer, more complex questions. A user can ask for product recommendations, compare options and refine the request through follow-up questions instead of clicking through a conventional list of search results.
Google says AI Mode queries are three times longer on average than traditional searches. Pichai also reported that one in five AI Mode searches globally involves voice, images or documents.
These interactions create additional opportunities to understand what a user needs. But a longer conversation does not necessarily translate into more paid clicks, higher advertising prices or a completed purchase.
Consider someone asking how to remove algae from a swimming pool. The AI response might explain the cleaning process and suggest checking the water chemistry. An advertisement for a pool vacuum or an algae treatment could be relevant, even if the original question did not mention a product.
This is the commercial opportunity Google is pursuing. Its challenge is to identify useful advertising opportunities without overwhelming the answer with promotional content.
How Ads Appear Inside AI Mode
Google says advertisements can appear within or alongside AI-generated responses when a search has commercial relevance. They are labelled “Sponsored” and visually distinguished from organic content.
Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible to serve in AI Mode when relevant. Advertisers do not need to create a dedicated AI Mode campaign or allocate a separate budget specifically for these placements.
According to Google’s explanation of advertising in AI-powered Search, the system can match ads directly to a commercial query or use the context of a broader question and the generated response to identify relevant products and services.
Google has also introduced multiturn ads in the United States, allowing advertising opportunities to extend into follow-up questions within an AI Mode conversation.
The company says early tests have produced promising results. Its October 28 announcement reported that click-through rates for sponsored product listings were similar to those for organic product listings within AI Mode.
However, that comparison was based on Google’s own US data collected between August 20 and September 3, 2026. It does not establish that AI Mode ads deliver equivalent conversion rates, sales or returns on advertising spend across every market.
What the Expansion Means for Nigeria
Nigeria’s inclusion is a concrete development for local advertisers. Businesses targeting Nigerian customers may become eligible for additional placements within Google’s AI-powered search experiences, provided their campaigns and ads meet Google’s eligibility requirements.
The rollout does not guarantee that every advertiser will immediately receive AI Mode impressions. Google’s current guidance lists English as the available language for ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode in the covered markets. It also specifies text ads only for Pakistan.
For Nigerian businesses, the practical response is to review existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns rather than assume a separate AI Mode campaign is necessary. Accurate product information, relevant landing pages, useful ad copy and clear pricing remain sensible priorities.
Advertisers should also watch their conversion data and costs. Google currently aggregates AI Mode performance into existing campaign reporting, which can make it difficult to isolate results from this specific placement.
The Bigger Question Is Whether AI Search Can Pay for Itself
Alphabet reported $127.58 billion in total revenue for Q3 2026, up 25% year over year. Google Cloud revenue grew 103% to $30.71 billion, while total Google advertising revenue reached approximately $82.01 billion.
Those results show that Alphabet’s business remains large and that its cloud operations are growing rapidly. They also highlight the financial pressure to maintain returns from Search, its largest advertising business, as the company invests in AI infrastructure and changes how people discover information.
Reuters reported that Alphabet’s quarterly revenue fell short of analyst expectations and that its shares dropped after the results. The advertising shortfall was one concern, although the broader financial outcome cannot be attributed to AI Mode alone.
Google’s international advertising expansion is an attempt to build a stronger commercial model around AI-assisted search. The company has provided evidence of growing usage and encouraging early ad engagement, but it has not disclosed standalone AI Mode revenue or the precise financial effect of its lower monetization.
For now, the most useful question is not how many people use AI Mode. It is how effectively Google can turn that activity into measurable value for advertisers while preserving the quality of its search experience.
The next earnings reports should provide a better indication of whether the expansion is improving Search’s advertising performance. Until Google publishes more specific financial and advertiser-return data, claims about AI Mode’s long-term profitability remain premature.
