NVIDIA has committed $250 million worth of artificial intelligence computing resources over five years to support safety and security research in the United Kingdom, with a focus on autonomous AI agents, open models and robotics.
Announced on October 13, the commitment provides computing access valued at $50 million annually. The resources will be delivered through NVIDIA Cloud Partners operating in the UK, with infrastructure hosted in the country. The arrangement is a contribution of computing capacity rather than a $250 million cash grant.
Most of the resources are intended for the wider UK AI safety and security research community. NVIDIA has named the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD), led by the University of Oxford, the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR), led by University College London, and Imperial College London among the recipients of a portion of the allocation.
The research will examine how increasingly autonomous AI systems can be developed, tested and operated safely. Planned areas of work include secure environments for evaluating AI agents, reproducible safety testing, benchmarks for assessing risks and safeguards against real-world threats. Imperial’s work will include safety engineering and robotics, where AI systems can interact with and act upon physical environments.
NVIDIA also identified OpenShell, its open and secure runtime software, and NVIDIA Sentry, its reference design, as technologies associated with the research effort. The programme is intended to support the development and evaluation of safeguards for agentic AI systems.
The commitment builds on an existing UK research network that includes BOLD and SOFAIR. The two labs are part of a separate government-backed programme announced by UK Research and Innovation in June 2026, which provided for up to £60 million in public funding. That funding is distinct from NVIDIA’s computing commitment.
NVIDIA has not published a breakdown of the $250 million allocation by institution, specified the computing hardware to be supplied or named the cloud partners that will deliver the resources. The company said provider selection, technical architecture and commercial terms remain to be agreed.
