Cloudways, a DigitalOcean company, announced on August 17 that its Managed AI Agents product had become generally available with OpenClaw and Hermes as its first supported agents.

OpenClaw was designed to run on infrastructure controlled by the user. Its official documentation supports deployment on Linux servers and cloud virtual private servers, including providers such as DigitalOcean, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Hetzner, Hostinger, Oracle Cloud and Railway. But operating an always-on agent requires more than installing the software, particularly when the deployment is connected to messaging services, files, external accounts or tools.

Cloudways said its new product is intended to simplify the deployment and management of AI agents by removing much of the infrastructure work normally required before an agent can be used. The company said customers can deploy OpenClaw without separately provisioning infrastructure, configuring containers, securing the environment and handling ongoing maintenance.

The move places managed OpenClaw hosting alongside a growing collection of services offering similar functionality. WPMU DEV now provides one-click managed OpenClaw hosting through its Unlimited Hosting platform, with agents managed from its Hub. Its offering includes backups, SSL, WAF protection, SSH and SFTP access, model controls and support for multiple OpenClaw agents, subject to available server resources.

WPMU DEV also positions the service for agencies that want separate agents for clients, projects or specific workflows. Examples on its service page include research, reporting, content preparation, client communication and recurring follow-ups.

OpenClaw itself has become one of the largest open-source AI agent projects by GitHub activity. The project’s repository currently shows about 387,000 stars and more than 81,000 forks. The project is developed by the OpenClaw Foundation, which describes OpenClaw as a personal AI assistant that connects models, tools, messaging channels and companion applications through a Gateway.

The official OpenClaw VPS deployment documentation explains that the Gateway runs on a server and maintains the agent’s state and workspace. It recommends keeping the Gateway on loopback and using methods such as SSH tunnels or Tailscale for remote access rather than exposing the Gateway directly to the public internet.

That guidance highlights one of the central issues managed hosting services are attempting to address. A self-hosted OpenClaw deployment can require server hardening, access controls, authentication, backups, updates and monitoring in addition to configuring the agent itself.

OpenClaw’s own security guidance also makes clear that the software is built around a trusted-operator model. It says a Gateway is intended for one user or trust boundary and is not designed to provide hostile multi-tenant isolation for unrelated users sharing the same agent or Gateway.

The project further warns that an OpenClaw agent can execute shell commands, read and write files, access network services and send messages when those capabilities are enabled. Its security documentation therefore recommends separate Gateways, operating-system users or hosts when stronger isolation is required.

Security concerns have become an important part of the wider OpenClaw ecosystem. A March 2026 academic study catalogued 190 OpenClaw security advisories and examined vulnerabilities across the Gateway, node-host, execution-policy, plugin, browser, sandbox and agent or prompt layers. The researchers described attack paths involving issues such as policy bypass, prompt injection and malicious skills.

Security company Trellix separately reported on August 19 that its researchers had investigated a supply-chain campaign targeting the OpenClaw skill ecosystem. The company’s report described malicious skills distributed through the ClawHub registry and several attack techniques, while noting that the specific issues examined were associated with older OpenClaw releases and registry snapshots observed during its research period.

These developments add another consideration for people deciding whether to operate OpenClaw themselves or place it on managed infrastructure. A managed provider can take responsibility for parts of the underlying server environment, but the customer is still placing an agent with potentially broad access to accounts, data and tools on infrastructure controlled by another company.

Several OpenClaw-focused hosting businesses have already entered the market. Services including AgentClaw, ClawBase, ClawCloud, Clawworks, Clawr, OpenClaw Launch, OpenClaw Host and OpenClawPro advertise combinations of managed deployment, isolated environments, backups, monitoring, updates and access to OpenClaw without requiring customers to administer a server manually.

The pricing approaches vary. AgentClaw advertises hosting at $9.99 per month per agent, while ClawBase advertises plans starting at $16 per month. Clawworks lists a $15 monthly BYOK plan and a $39 monthly option that includes Claude Opus. OpenClaw Launch advertises plans starting at $3 per month. These are provider-listed prices and should be treated as service pricing rather than evidence of an established market-wide rate.

Bring-your-own-key, or BYOK, is also appearing among managed OpenClaw services. Under that model, customers provide their own credentials for an AI model provider while paying the hosting company for the infrastructure. This separates server costs from model usage, although the amount a customer ultimately spends can still vary according to how heavily an agent uses AI models and tools.

Other providers are moving toward a broader managed-agent model rather than hosting alone. Featherless, for example, has introduced a managed runtime for open-source AI agents beginning with OpenClaw and combines agent hosting with sandboxing, persistent storage and access to its model catalogue.

The growing range of offerings suggests that the commercial opportunity around OpenClaw is not limited to virtual private servers. Services are increasingly competing on deployment, security, persistence, monitoring, access management, model configuration and support.

For developers, the appeal is straightforward: a self-hosted deployment provides direct control over the infrastructure, while a managed service shifts some of the operational work to a provider. The trade-off is that customers must evaluate the provider’s security practices, isolation controls, backup policies, access to secrets and procedures for updating the underlying OpenClaw environment.

OpenClaw’s continued growth is giving those decisions greater significance. Its architecture combines an AI model with tools, messaging channels, files and system-level capabilities, making the hosting environment part of the overall security boundary rather than simply a place to install an application.

The project’s GitHub repository, meanwhile, continues to show substantial development activity, while the official project documentation is becoming more detailed around deployment and security practices.

Managed hosting services for OpenClaw are emerging as developers, agencies and businesses look for simpler ways to keep the open-source AI agent running without handling all of the underlying server administration themselves.
