Almost everyone who uses Gmail<\/a> eventually asks: can I change my Gmail email address without losing my emails and other Google data? The answer is now yes for some personal Google Accounts.<\/p>\n

Google has introduced an option that allows eligible users to change their main @gmail.com<\/code> address to another available @gmail.com<\/code> address while keeping the same Google Account. Your old address becomes an alternate address, so emails sent to it can still reach your inbox.<\/p>\n

The feature is still not available to everyone. If Google does not show the option in your account settings, you may need to keep your existing address or create a new Gmail account and migrate your data.<\/p>\n

What \u201cChange Gmail Address\u201d Actually Means<\/h2>\n

People use that phrase to mean several different things, and the right solution depends on what you actually want to change.<\/p>\n

First, there\u2019s the display name<\/a>.<\/strong> This is the name people see when you send an email. You can change it without changing your Gmail address or Google Account.<\/p>\n

Second, there\u2019s the Gmail address itself<\/strong>. This is the username before @gmail.com<\/code>. Google now allows some personal users to change this address to another available Gmail address.<\/p>\n

Third, there are aliases<\/strong> and \u201csend as\u201d addresses. These can let you send or receive messages using another address while keeping your main account.<\/p>\n

Finally, Google Workspace accounts work differently. For work, school or other organization accounts, an administrator can usually rename a user’s primary address or add an alias through the organization’s admin tools.<\/p>\n

Can I Change My Gmail Email Address?<\/h2>\n

Yes, but only if your Google Account has the option. Google now supports changing a personal @gmail.com<\/code> address to another @gmail.com<\/code> address on eligible accounts.<\/p>\n

To check, open your Google Account and go to Personal info \u2192 Email \u2192 Google Account email<\/strong>. You may also use the Google Account email settings page.<\/p>\n

If you see an option to change the Google Account email, you can choose a new available Gmail username and follow the instructions shown by Google.<\/p>\n

If you do not see the option, the feature is not currently available for your account. In that case, creating a new Gmail account remains the main alternative.<\/p>\n

What Happens When You Change Your Gmail Address?<\/h2>\n

Changing your Gmail address does not create a completely separate Google Account. Your existing account and its data remain in place.<\/p>\n

Google says your previous Gmail address becomes an alternate email address. You can continue receiving messages sent to both the old and new addresses.<\/p>\n

Your existing Google data is also kept. This includes Gmail messages, Google Photos and other information stored in the account.<\/p>\n
