That is also the problem.

Give a language model a topic and you will often get clean sentences, neat headings, sensible transitions and very little that is actually wrong. Yet read enough AI-written articles and a pattern becomes obvious: the writing can be perfectly readable while still feeling strangely empty.

Making AI-generated content sound more human is not really about adding slang, deliberately making grammar worse, or hunting for words that supposedly “expose” AI. The better approach is to make the content genuinely more useful, more specific and more recognizably written by a person.

What Actually Makes AI Writing Feel Artificial?

The obvious problem is often not grammar. It is sameness.

AI-generated articles frequently rely on broad statements such as “businesses must adapt to the rapidly changing digital landscape” or “there are several benefits to using AI.” These sentences are grammatically fine, but they could fit almost any article on almost any website.

Human writers tend to leave fingerprints behind. They have preferences. They make comparisons. They explain something through an example they have actually encountered. They might admit that a feature sounds useful on paper but becomes frustrating in practice.

Research from the Association for Computational Linguistics backs up an important part of this distinction. A 2025 study involving 300 nonfiction articles found that people who frequently use AI for writing were surprisingly good at identifying AI-generated text. Their judgments were based not only on familiar vocabulary, but also on things such as formality, originality and clarity.

In other words, swapping a few words is not enough. Readers can pick up on the shape of the writing itself.

Start With Human Material

The easiest way to get a more human result is to give the AI something genuinely human to work with.

Instead of opening ChatGPT and writing, “Write an article about password managers,” start with your own material. Give it notes from your research, questions readers have asked, products you have actually tested, mistakes you have encountered, useful statistics and the points you believe other articles are missing.

This is also consistent with OpenAI’s current writing guidance, which recommends giving the model raw material and treating the output as a draft that should be reviewed rather than accepted as final authority.

That small change has a big effect. The model is no longer inventing the substance from scratch. It is helping you organize and express information that already has context.

Replace Generic Claims With Specific Details

Specificity is one of the fastest ways to make an AI draft feel less synthetic.

Consider the difference between these two sentences:

Generic: “AI can save businesses significant time.”

Specific: “A support team answering the same customer questions every afternoon can use AI to create the first draft of those replies, then spend the saved time checking accuracy and handling unusual cases.”

The second sentence gives the reader something to picture.

Whenever an AI draft makes a broad claim, ask a simple question: What does that look like in real life?

Replace “improves productivity” with the task that becomes faster.

Replace “better security” with the threat or control being discussed.

Replace “easy to use” with the specific part of the setup that is easy.

Replace “cost-effective” with an actual price, comparison or use case when reliable data is available.

Give the Article a Point of View

AI tends to be excessively agreeable. It often presents both sides, summarizes the obvious and carefully avoids taking a position.

Human writing can be more useful when it exercises judgment.

For example, instead of saying that “AI has advantages and disadvantages for content creation,” you could argue that AI is excellent at getting a blank page moving but becomes risky when the person publishing the article stops questioning the output.

That is not a dramatic opinion. It is simply a position.

A strong article should leave the reader knowing what the writer thinks, what the evidence says and where the limits are.

Do Not Fake Experience

There is a tempting shortcut in AI-assisted writing: invent a first-person story because it makes the article sound authentic.

Don’t.

If you did not test a product, don’t write that you tested it. If you did not speak to a customer, don’t invent the conversation. If you did not personally encounter a problem, don’t manufacture an anecdote to make the article appear more authoritative.

Real expertise is more valuable than synthetic personality.

When first-hand experience is available, explain what was actually observed. When it is not, attribute the information honestly. A sentence such as “According to the company’s documentation” is more trustworthy than a fabricated experience.

Google’s people-first content guidance explicitly asks whether content demonstrates first-hand expertise and whether it adds original information, research or analysis rather than simply reworking what already exists.

Edit the Structure, Not Just the Words

One of the biggest mistakes people make is asking AI to “make this sound human” and then accepting the same structure with slightly different vocabulary.

That rarely fixes the underlying problem.

Read the article as an editor instead. Cut the paragraph that says nothing new. Move the strongest observation higher. Combine repetitive sections. Break up an explanation that has become too long. Add an example where the concept feels abstract.

You might even delete the introduction entirely and start with the problem the reader actually came to solve.

That is often more effective than replacing “utilize” with “use” fifty times.

Use Natural Sentence Rhythm

Human writing has rhythm.

A short sentence can create emphasis.

Then a longer sentence can slow the reader down and provide the explanation that the previous sentence deliberately withheld.

AI-generated prose often gives every sentence roughly the same weight. The result is smooth, but monotonous.

During editing, vary sentence length naturally. Keep contractions where they fit. Allow an occasional fragment when it improves the rhythm. Don’t force imperfections into the text simply to appear human.

The goal is not bad grammar. The goal is writing that sounds like somebody made decisions.

Stop Chasing AI Detectors

There is another trap worth avoiding: writing specifically to beat AI detectors.

That is a weak target because detector performance is inconsistent and the technology keeps changing. A 2025 ACL study tested 12 AI-text detectors on 15,000 AI-polished samples and found that the systems frequently flagged even minimally AI-edited writing as AI-generated.

Another 2025 study found that several detection systems performed poorly when tested across different models, domains and prompting approaches.

There is a much better test: would a knowledgeable reader find this useful?

That question also lines up with Google’s current approach to AI-assisted publishing. Its guidance says generative AI can be useful for research and adding structure to original content, but producing many pages without adding value can violate its scaled-content-abuse policy.

A Practical AI-to-Human Editing Workflow

For articles I would publish on a serious website, the workflow should look more like an editorial process than a one-click generator.

Research the topic. Collect authoritative sources, relevant statistics, examples and questions from the intended audience.

Decide the angle. Know what the article is actually trying to explain, challenge or solve.

Give the AI your raw material. Include notes, source information, terminology and constraints.

Generate the draft. Use AI to organize ideas and overcome the blank page.

Fact-check everything specific. Verify dates, figures, prices, product capabilities, quotes and technical claims.

Remove generic passages. Delete anything that could be pasted unchanged into dozens of competing articles.

Add human judgment. Bring in your observations, comparisons, caveats and conclusions.

Edit the voice. Rewrite sentences you would never naturally say.

Optimize for search last. Refine headings, internal links and keyword placement after the article is useful.

That process is close to the Plan → Draft → Revise → Package workflow recommended by OpenAI for writing with ChatGPT.

A Simple Test Before You Publish

Read the4 article without thinking about AI at all.

Ask yourself whether it contains something a reader could not easily get from ten other pages. Does it have a useful example? A meaningful comparison? A clear conclusion? Evidence? First-hand knowledge? A perspective that belongs to the author?

If the answer is no, more “humanizing” probably won’t save it. The article needs better thinking, not more casual wording.

This is where tools such as Prose Coach can fit into the workflow: use them as part of the editing process to improve readability and presentation, while the writer remains responsible for the substance and final voice.

The Real Goal Is Better Writing

The best AI-assisted content does not feel human because somebody sprinkled slang over it.

It feels human because somebody had something useful to say.

AI can help with structure, drafting, rewriting and speed. It can make the first version much easier to produce. But the strongest material usually appears during the messy part that comes afterward: checking the facts, questioning the obvious answer, adding a concrete example, cutting the unnecessary paragraph and deciding what you actually believe.

That is the part worth protecting.

Google’s current guidance for both traditional Search and its generative AI experiences emphasizes original, useful, non-commodity content, unique perspectives and satisfying the reader’s needs. In practice, that means the safest route is not to hide AI involvement. It is to make the finished work genuinely worth reading.

AI can produce a polished article in seconds.
